PRACTICE PREVIEWING
BEFORE READING: PREVIEWING WITH T.H.I.E.V.E.S..
(discussed on pg. 116 of your textbook)
T = Title= What is the title of the article? (Textbook connection = Identify the title of the chapter.)
H = Headings = Turn headings into questions. (Some articles, like textbooks, feature headings.)
I = Introduction = Read the introduction.  How does this prepare you for the article to come?
E = Every first sentence of every paragraph = Read the first sentence of each paragraph.  
Based on these sentences and everything else so far, what do you predict the article will be about?
V = Vocabulary & Visuals= Hunt for vocabulary words (bold, italics, chapter beginnings &
endings)
Highlight words & definitions.  Hunt for visuals.What kinds are included? (photographs?
drawings? graphs? figures? charts? tables? cartoons? maps?)
Read captions, titles, descriptions, & keys.  
E = End of the chapter questions = Read questions before you read the chapter.  Use these
questions to help guide your reading / exam study.
(E is for End of textbook chapter questions, but
you may consider connections to other types of texts.)
S = Summary = Does the chapter/reading feature a summary?  If so, read the summary.  How
does the summary help prepare you for the material to follow?
