T = Title = What is the title of the chapter?
H = Headings = Turn headings into questions. (Highlight the headings and subheadings as you
I = Introduction = Read the introduction. How does this prepare you for the text to come?
E = Every first sentence of every paragraph = Read and underline the first sentence of
each paragraph. Based on these sentences and everything else so far, what do you predict this text will be
V = Vocabulary & Visuals= Hunt for vocabulary words (bold, italics, chapter beginnings &
endings) Highlight or circle words & definitions. Hunt for visuals. What kinds are included?
(photographs? drawings? graphs? figures? charts? tables? cartoons? maps?) Stop and review these visuals.
Read and highlight captions and titles. Also review descriptions & keys.
E = End of the text questions =Read these questions before you read the entire text. Use
these questions to help guide your reading / study.
S = Summary = If the text features a summary, read it. How does the summary help
prepare you for the text to come?

a.) Discipline Specific Vocabulary Questions (pg. 131)
b.) Essay Questions (pg. 133)
A = Answer = Answer your own questions.
H = Highlight = Use markers to make important information stand out.
a.) To avoid highlighting too much information, avoid highlighting as you read.
b.) Instead, when you have completed reading a paragraph, decide what is the most important
information and highlight this information, probably including the topic sentence and major
c.) Read and highlight all the boldface information as well, including chapter titles, headings,
subheadings, and key vocabulary words. (pg.138)
A = ANNOTATE = within the text and/or in the margins
